The Irish Summer National Age Group Championships are well underway, and day three delivered an exciting array of races and outstanding performances. This event showcases the talent and dedication of young swimmers, and it's a pleasure to witness their progress and achievements.
Relay Races and National Titles
The day began with national relay medals up for grabs. In the Male & Open 12yrs 200m Freestyle Relay, Aer Lingus took the gold with a close finish, just eight-hundredths of a second ahead of Ards. Trojan secured the bronze. The Female 12yrs 200m Freestyle Relay saw Trojan claim the national title, with Dolphin and Glenalbyn taking silver and bronze, respectively.
The relay races continued with the Male & Open 13/14yrs 400m Freestyle Relay, where Lurgan and Coolmine battled it out, with Lurgan edging ahead by a mere 0.09 seconds. Bangor dominated the Female 13/14yrs 400m Freestyle Relay, with Galway and Aer Lingus following closely behind.
Individual Excellence
The Female 800m Freestyle events showcased some impressive swims. In the 13yrs race, Vanessa Hamilton of Bangor swam a remarkable 10:02.45 to win gold. Tara Finnegan of Curragh took silver, closely followed by Annie Francis of Swim Belfast. The 14yrs title went to Chloe Stewart of Bangor, who impressed with a winning time of 9:26.54. Meadhbh Ní Riain, swimming in her home pool, secured silver for Limerick.
The Female 12-14yrs 50m Breaststroke saw Sofiia Kostanetska of Cookstown dominate, winning gold in 35.53. Jessica Sweeney and Sophia Winterbach of Drogheda took silver and bronze, respectively.
Backstroke Battles
The Male & Open 200m Backstroke events were particularly thrilling. Zayn Finnegan of Curragh continued his impressive championship run, winning gold in the 12yrs race. The 13yrs event saw Ronan Cranney of Leander edge out a thrilling finish, while Eoghan McQuillan of Lisburn dominated the 14yrs race.
Butterfly Finishes
The Female 100m Butterfly races produced some of the closest finishes of the day. Amelia Cray of Tallaght won gold in the 12yrs event, with Alana McEvoy of Swilly Seals taking silver. The 13yrs race was decided by just four hundredths of a second, with Philippa Costello of Dolphin claiming the national title. In the 14yrs event, Olivia Falls of Bangor powered to gold.
The Male & Open 100m Butterfly event featured highly competitive age-group races. Zayn Finnegan of Curragh claimed the national title in the 12yrs event, while Daniel Jordan of Wexford narrowly edged out Luciano Rodriguez Mendoza of Templeogue in the 13yrs race. Dylan Lyons of ALSAA took gold in the 14yrs event.
A Day of Close Contests
The Female 200m Individual Medley event brought an exciting close to day two. Alana McEvoy of Swilly Seals delivered a strong performance to win gold in the 12yrs race. The 13yrs event saw Una Casey of Blackrock secure the national title, narrowly ahead of Tara Finnegan of Curragh. In the 14yrs race, Olivia Falls won gold in another closely contested affair.
