Iron Kingdom, the old-school metal band, is set to take over the Prince George Playhouse with their unique blend of traditional and modern heavy metal. This Vancouver-based group, led by Chris Osterman, has been making waves in the underground metal scene, captivating fans with their soaring vocal harmonies and guitar solos inspired by the classics of the 1970s and 1980s.
What makes Iron Kingdom stand out is their ability to bridge the gap between the extreme and the accessible. Osterman explains, 'We've battled the idea that heavy metal has to be extreme. Recently, it feels like people have accepted that it doesn't have to be extreme to be heavy metal.' This approach has not only attracted a diverse fan base but has also introduced new listeners to the local metal scene.
The band's visual aesthetic, drawing on ancient and medieval imagery, further enhances their appeal. Osterman notes, 'We bring people in who might not normally come out. They like the clean vocals and melodic solos, and then it opens them up to the other local bands.'
Iron Kingdom's journey began in 2011, but the members had been playing together for years under a different name. They gained recognition after appearing on Canada's Got Talent in 2012, earning unanimous approval from judges. However, their televised audition led to a unique challenge. Osterman recalls, 'It's weird because they never officially told us we were no longer in the show. After we aired, CBC asked what we'd like to do if we advanced. We suggested things like pyrotechnics or fog machines to make it a big production. They said they couldn't afford it, and then we never heard back.'
Despite the show's impact, the band's authenticity remained intact. Osterman reflects, 'I think from an awareness standpoint it was worth it. But being on a TV show can make an underground band seem a little less authentic. Overall, though, it was fun. We got to play in front of a lot of people, and it was cool to be recognized.'
Iron Kingdom's latest album, 'Shadows and Dust,' showcases a fusion of new and old influences. Osterman highlights, 'For the first time in our history, I think Dio's influence shines through more than before. We've always loved Dio, but on this album, you can really hear it. There are also stronger Judas Priest influences, including some chromatic guitar work that we hadn't explored before. It's an extremely varied album.'
The band's live performances are a spectacle to behold. Osterman teases, 'We always open with something fast and exciting. But the ending is what people remember. We build to a long finale, get the crowd fired up, black out the stage, and then our bass player comes out with, 'Are you not entertained!' to kick off the encore.'
As Iron Kingdom tours across Canada, Prince George remains a favorite stop. Osterman enthuses, 'There's so much energy, everybody's excited, and people make it feel special when a band comes through. It's always a highlight of the tour.'
